Company Profile:
The research group focuses its scientific research in the design and implementation of
various decomposition techniques sub-band signals for processing, coding and transmission using multicarrier systems.
It consists of 8 full-time doctoral researchers and 6 being training. The ability of the group is shown in the 14 competitive projects with public funding, also having a clear intention to transfer results as evidenced by 3 patents that have been granted.

Multicarrier Modulation Techniques for Broadband Communications

What we offer:
The standards for broadband communications (WiFi, WiMAX, xDSL, ...) recommend Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) as multicarrier modulation technique, both in cable communications (Discrete Multitone Modulation (DMT)) and wireless communications (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM)). In channels disturbed by noise, DFT filter banks provide an elegant and computationally efficient solution, but also present serious deficiencies such as the following. 1) Sensitivity to time and frequency synchronization. 2) Large overlap between adjacent sub-channels, that when there is a loss of the orthogonality between them, a consequent increase in inter-channel interference (ICI) and a bad behaviour of the system in the presence of narrowband noise appear; this is a particularly serious problem in VDSL systems, since some frequency bands are shared with radio amateurs, or for cognitive radio systems, where a bigger spectral separation to prevent interferences between primary and secondary users is needed; 3) Echo and crosstalk problems.
We offer alternative solutions to IDFT/DFTbased systems to implement the multicarrier modulation, using modulated filter banks (FBMC) or discrete trigonometric transforms to perform both data transmission and reception. Our research is focused on designing both time (located at the receiver, just before the demodulator) and frequency (just following the demodulator) domain equalizers for the above systems, reducing the dispersive effects of the communication channel.

What we are looking for:
We are looking for companies interested in technical co-operation and collaboration to jointly work in research projects related to the above alternative solutions. This collaboration can be concretized through license agreements, research contracts or technical consultancy to assist with the new technology integration
